New entrance for Hakaru Hall

Hakaru’s grand old hall is undergoing a facelift which will see the original front doors relocated to fulfil their initial purpose – serving as, well, front doors – to welcome visitors into the historic 1926 building.

Hakaru Hall committee secretary, local builder and project supervisor Dennis Reeve says when the building was extended in the late 1940s, early ‘50s, effectively doubling its size, and the current entrance area was added on, the doors were moved inside the hall.

“So, we’re just putting them back really. The doors will be on the roadside front again and will open into a lobby which will lead into the hall.”

Overseen by a steering committee, Dennis and crew, local builder Dion Wech and apprentice Ayla Dacombe, are also building a deck to span out from the entrance along the northern side with a small roof for cover, an easier access for the men’s toilet and creating storage for the facility’s tables and chairs.

The new layout was designed by Gaylene Rodgers of Camphor Tree Studios and the improvements were made possible by the ‘helpful support’ and grants from Kaipara District Council and Kaiwaka Sports Association.
