Big holiday bowls day again popularAs usual the post-Christmas fun bowling day at the Mangawhai Club attracted a huge gathering of bowlers, wannabe bowlers, has-beens and hangers-on, and was topped with a liberal helping of good cheer.
Over 40 teams fronted including a lot of holidaying youngsters keen to try their hand at something new, plus those who entered the spirit of the day by coming in costume. Costume prizewinners were Three And A Half Men, followed by Zoo Lu’s, and Sit On It. With only one experienced bowler per team of four, the door was wide open for some incredibly good – if flukish – shots and alternatively some incredibly bad shots which all added to the fun. And though the greens were running fast this was certainly no level playing field. The organisers put up lots of raffle prizes including wine, meat packs and scallops so many unsuccessful on the greens went home with a nice little something for the barby. Three games in the hot sun proved plenty of exercise for most but the day ended with the addition of semi-local band The Kavalliers. Led by David Marshall and backed by a trio who had performed the length and breadth of Kiwi music since the sixties, they belted out 60s and 70s covers to the delight of the crowd. We look forward to doing it all again next year. |
