Dredge gets a spruce upThe Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society’s dredge, the Spirit of Mangawhai II, is to be slipped in Whangarei over January for a much-needed antifouling and for work on the motor and pump. MHRS dredge committee convener, Doug Lloyd, told a public meeting early in January – called to update the community on the future work plan for the Society – that the dredge had not been slipped for many years. “This year it is going to be really busy removing sand from Bullet Point where there has been a real build up. We hope to begin dredging in February and continue right through to the end of August, “ he said. Mr Lloyd said that the dredge played an important function in that it kept the estuary navigable. The Society recently had the estuary surveyed so that sand builds could be compared with the previous survey completed in 2005. Comparisons enabled the society to plan future dredging. - PHOTO/File |
