Hawks spreading their wingsLocals have been faithfully following the fortunes of the Otamatea Hawks Rugby teams since the formation of the club thirty years ago.
Head coach Mike Henderson has been involved with Otamatea Rugby for over 20 years coaching at various levels within the club. This year the club has stepped things up another gear in fielding a womens team in the Northland Premier Womens Rugby competition for the 2019 season and are looking to recruit any women from the Rodney Otamatea area who may be interested in having a go. “Ideally we would like 10-12 more players of any experience level,” says Hawks Rugby Club president Michael Tovine. “The aim is to get as many females playing the game as we can.” This is the first time Otamatea Hawks has fielded a team in the womens competition which starts in May. Northland Senior Womens player Bron Hames has been the driving force behind this venture gradually building a group of keen and dedicated girls including a NZ Black Fern player who will shortly be joining the squad. Want to be involved? Call Bron Hames 027 425 8046 or email horsiehames@yahoo.co.nz. Trainings are Monday and Thursday, 6.30pm at Kaiwaka Sports Association grounds.
