Tomarata School welcomes new principal13 Mar, 2023
Tomarata Primary School is off to a fantastic start this school year with the appointment of new principal, Chris King. Chris, his wife, and daughter have made the move from Invercargill, where he served as deputy principal at St Theresa’s School. The school community came together to give Chris a warm welcome at a special assembly held on Monday February 20. A powhiri led by Cara Jackson formally welcomed Chris and his family, with Chris and wife Victoria responding with a waiata. The assembly was followed by a shared meal where students, staff, and families joined together to enjoy games and socialise. The barbecue was overseen by Chris himself, who put his grilling skills to the test. The school pizza oven was also put to good use, churning out a large number of delicious pizzas. With a varied background in teaching and school management, Chris brings a wealth of experience to his new role as principal. Chris has also worked for Massey University where he had the opportunity to mentor teachers in schools throughout the country. "I am thrilled to be part of such a supportive and welcoming community and am looking forward to working with the students, staff, and parents at Tomarata School,” says Chris. The school community is equally excited and looks forward to working with Chris to continue building upon the strong foundations of the school. “We are excited to have Chris as our new principal, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will make on our school and community,” says school board chair, Jason Kerrisk. Tomarata School's commitment to the outdoors and the local environment remains a priority this year. With an orchard, productive vegetable garden (part of the Garden to Table programme), chickens, Trees for Survival programme, and a nature classroom – where one class ventures out every week to learn in the natural environment – the school provides a rich and immersive learning experience for its students.
