Club bowled over by big dayOn Mangawhai bowling’s big summer fun day run between Christmas and New Year, the only colour hard to find was the traditional white as holidaymakers turn up in a plethora of colours and outfits befitting a summer family activity.
Many have limited knowledge or ability in the game but are always keen to test their skills against similarly ill-equipped teams. Teams consist of just one dedicated bowler with the remainder being of dubious ability and therein lies the theme of the day with the non-bowlers adding the ‘fun’ element. Throwing convention to the wind, men, women and children, many in fancy dress, show some brilliant skills and alternatively make some horrendous mistakes which all adds to the laughter and enjoyment of this annual affair. Some scores were drastically low but others were incredibly high, brought about mainly by good luck rather than good management though all entered fully into the spirit of the competition. Good sponsorship from local businesses provided numerous prizes for both the bowling competitions as well as the many raffles run during the day. Prizes for raffle and bowling winners were numerous and well spread but being holiday time this day has always been about having a good time and that edict was followed to a tee. Special thanks to donors and sponsors. Fancy dress winners were the regular contestants The Bushwackers, second were Santa’s Sacks and third prize went to the Winey Witches. The fancy dress prizes were sponsored by the Focus whose team ‘Out of Focus’ were also winners of their division ensuring a good day was had by all. - PHOTOS/Melody Tito |
