What silly season?
Local police are applauding locals and visitors alike for a relatively low-incident holiday season despite the increase in Mangawhai’s population. 

Constable Dale Wewege says that there was ‘nothing serious’ reported and the low rate possibly could be attributed to police being out on the roads and more visible in the community this season. Crowds at Northern Bass concert were well-behaved and even the ‘booze-bus’ picked up only a small percentage of people driving while over the limit he says.

“We actually only got three drivers in Mangawhai between Christmas day to now… and the drivers weren’t even over the limit that much either,” he says. “Want to thank the community, behaviour has been very good and everyone seemed to have a good holiday.” 

Vandalism spree
An investigation is underway however in regards to a vandalism spree which occurred in the early hours of January 6 between 3-4am. Letterboxes were kicked over and bottles smashed along Pearson Street, allegedly by two caucasian men in their early 20’s, one blonde, one brown haired and are possibly locals. Police hope to make arrests soon, however if anyone has any information about the incident they can report anonymously to Crimestoppers 0800 555 111, or visit the police personally. 

One that got away
A fishing torpedo has been handed in to police and has not yet been claimed. Owners will need to identify the equipment before collection. Police want to remind people to please report any lost property.
