New walkway a group effortLocals will have noticed the activity on Rakaunui land opposite Old Waipu Road late last month, with an excavator working and metal being delivered. The work, now complete, has involved the construction of a new walking track linking Molesworth Drive with the Pearson/Kainui esplanade reserve. “Walkers can now go from Molesworth Drive all the way to the Mangawhai Tavern around the harbour edge,” says Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust spokesperson Gordon Hosking. “It’s another small link completed in our vision of a round-theharbour walkway.” The project involved enthusiastic collaboration between land owners Malcolm and Pauline of Rakaunui Arts Village, Kaipara District Council’s Mike Collins who found the money, and the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust who cleared the track and managed the project – Dave Hyndman did all the hard work on the excavator. It took just two weeks from the site meeting to agree the plan to completing the walkway. PHOTO/SUPPLIED |
