Waipu hosts norths biggest car yardIf you happen to save your summer travels until after the Christmas rush it would be a good to time your visit north around the Waipu Car & Bike Show at the Caledonian Park on Sunday February 9.
In a few short years this has become the biggest car show in the north with 700 cars and 150 bikes on display last year. More impressive than the numbers however is the variety and calibre of vehicles with a number heading towards 80 years old – a couple even older – from the smallest to the longest and the loudest, and from almost every country you can imagine. The car show opens up a different world especially to younger generations who, on taking time to talk to owners, will understand the passion and dedication that has gone into the refurbishment and reconditioning of many vehicles. Some have been treated with kid gloves most of their lives while others have virtually been left to die quietly in a forgotten field until rescued and resuscitated by an eagleeyed enthusiast with a heart of gold. “Every year something completely new rolls in the gate,” says event co-organiser Ron Cave. “There is no end to the interest and great conversations these vehicles and motorbikes can generate and it’s all for the community.” The day is run by volunteers, many from the local college with all funds distributed to the Waipu Fire Service, Bream Bay College and the Bream Bay swimming Club. Sponsors too play a major part, donating prizes for a dozen or more categories of vehicle with the winner of the ‘public choice’ award always eagerly awaited. The park is surrounded by trees and tables giving some respite from the harsh summer sun where visitors are able to enjoy a wide variety of quality foods, drinks, music and entertainment.
