Police SnippetsLocal burglaries
Mangawhai police have investigated three local burglaries in the last month which occurred in night time hours with one property hit twice. Officers have identified possible offenders with one female suspect actually being an employee at one address, hired via facebook. Senior constable Rob Cato urges the community to please take care when inviting unknown people onto property. “When opening your home to others, please secure valuables and keep them out of sight, and if you have any questions regarding people coming on to your property, you can call police for advice.” Trailers have also been targeted in recent weeks, hooked up and driven off private properties by brazen thieves. “Before purchasing a trailer, just do normal precautionary checks to make sure they are not stolen and store them securely on your property,” Cato says. “If anyone has information on any of the burglaries or trailer thefts, please call the police on the non-emergency phone number, 105.” 105 is a nationwide, 24/ 7 service available via phone and online 105.police.govt.nz, and is for reporting crimes that have already occurred and are non-urgent. Call 111 for emergencies and current crimes. Speed reminder Police also want to remind drivers to pay extra attention to their speed along Insley Street due to ongoing construction works at the school resulting in more vehicles parked on the side of the road and children crossing. ‘On a positive note’ Cato says local police are impressed by most drivers following the reduced speed limits around Mangawhai especially along the Mangawhai Central excavation site on Molesworth Drive. “We’ve had one incident where a contractor was rear-ended at high speed… but pleasing to see most people reducing their speed through this area,” he says. “We really don’t want to give out tickets, especially during these post-lockdown financial times.” - REPORTING/JULIA WADE |
