Mangawhai Walking WeekendSummer days are here, so now is the time to plan your walks for the forthcoming Mangawhai Walking Weekend running 15-18 March 2018. Check out the exciting walks and adventures around our beautiful little town.
The Mangawhai Walking Weekend is a regular event for locals and visitors alike. It is a time to indulge in an energetic and enjoyable weekend while exploring magical Mangawhai. This year’s walks include many popular favourites such as the ‘Bald Rock and Kauri Bush walk’, ‘Mangawhai Garden Spectacular’, ‘Blokes' Sheds’, ‘Te Arai’, ‘Estuary to Ocean’, ‘Romance on the Kaipara’, ‘Geology’ and of course the renowned ‘Mangawhai Cliff Top Walk’, now on DoC’s list of New Zealand’s best short walks! Our pride of place for 2018 goes to the exciting new Tanekaha Botanical Track. This outstanding track links the Tanekaha Falls and Forest Tracks as it gently rises and falls, crosses small streams and leads through spectacular native regenerating forest. Our Brynderwyn tracks are gems for those that love a good kiwi bush walk. Built by our own Track’s Trust, ‘trackies’ as we call them in Mangawhai, this spectacular walk will not be opened until just before the Walking Weekend, so be amongst the first to experience this outstanding guided bush walk. If you are looking for something a little more restful try ‘Four Beaches and an Ice-Cream’ and visit some of our East Coast’s most spectacular golden beaches. Walk them or just sit and enjoy the view. For the more energetic the ‘Hash Run’ returns again, especially designed for those who love a good cross country adventure. For something new, Te Whai Wines will be hosting a ‘Vineyard Visit and Winemakers Lunch’ on Sunday 18 March. Take the opportunity to enjoy the award winning wines of the fabulous King Road vineyards. For the younger and young at heart, we have added ‘Learn to Surf’ to the ‘Kayaking’ and ‘Paddle-boarding’ activities, with Aotearoa Surf guaranteeing to have you catching a wave at the end of the session! Due to popular request, Thursday's ‘The Long Tramp’ has been reintroduced. It's especially rewarding for keen trampers who enjoy a more challenging day out. It includes around eight hours of exploring Mangawhai’s coastline, Brynderwyn forest and new Tanekaha Botanical Track. Friday afternoon’s Troubadour Trail is a ramble around the beautiful Mangawhai Estuary; enjoy the fun, the entertainment and coastal views as you follow your guide around the estuary clifftop track to magical locations. Bring a folding seat or lie on the grass as you listen to music, be challenged by magic and enjoy surprises. We encourage the entire family to attend. Starting times are 2.30, 3.00 and 3.30pm. Happy walkers will of course be able to let their hair down at the Food & Wine Festival on the afternoon of Saturday 17 March. With the classic sounds of the Motown Band, dancing is guaranteed! Enjoy great local wines, delicious food; find a comfy spot under the olive trees to enjoy the rays of the late summer sun. This is a R18 event, so no children are permitted entry. Come along and enjoy our magical Mangawhai hospitality with beautiful walks, great adventures, knowledgeable guides and of course a memorable weekend, all courtesy of the 100 plus Mangawhai volunteers who make this annual weekend happen!
