Fairy terns pick their plot

The pre-season preparation of fairy tern nesting sites on Waipu Spit is well underway thanks to Waipu AboutTern volunteers.

Following the recent spell of wild weather fencing was a top priority, including fixing broken sections of the permanent roped off areas, as well as maintaining weed control.

This year the group will wait to see which sites the birds prefer to nest in before erecting new protective fences.

Walkways will also be created to protect the birds by steering the public away from these sites.
