Support 'absolute magic', thousands raised for Cancer Society

To date, more than $12,000 of local cash has been collected for the Cancer Society’s largest fundraiser, Daffodil Day. Taking place in late August, several community events were planned including a Mystery Walk, Quiz Night as well as a street collection, and Mangawhai Daffodil Day coordinator, Jeanne Jury, says the support has been ‘absolute magic’.

“Twelve thousand is pretty special for Mangawhai. I think it’s because we haven’t had a Daffodil Day for two years because of Covid, and maybe it just reminded people how important cancer is.”

A large portion of the donations came from the Quiz Night which MC John Phillis ‘was very focused on, was a great event’, with the amount boosted further by local business support, including a basket of goodies Mangawhai Heads Four Square owners Hamish and Hannah Townsend put together for a raffle. And there is even more to come, Jeanne says.

“We’re also having a Bubbles and High Tea at Mangawhai Club this Wednesday with a fashion parade,” she says. “In previous events, local retailers have put on the fashion show but this year the Mangawhai Opportunity Shop, the Factory, are taking it on. I’ve sourced – and coerced – a few local models and there will be lots of goodies.”

After the parade the clothes from the Factory and other donors will be available for sale, with proceeds split between the Cancer Society, the Factory and St John, ‘so everyone benefits’.

“Every one of us has either directly or indirectly been affected by this disease,” Jeanne says. “In my case both my mum and my father-in-law died of brain cancer and the support we got from the Cancer Society at that time was so special, I’m in total awe and gratitude of them and that’s why the cause is so special to me.”

“Every one of us has either directly or indirectly been affected by this disease.”
