Mangawhai cadets compete in Aussie compDuring the first week of the July School Holidays, Rachel Logue and Brydon Melia from Mangawhai Army Cadet Unit travelled to Australia as part of a National Army Cadet Team, to compete in the Australian Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge 2018. Though the NZ team did not win, Rachel and Bryden made the most of the opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Mangawhai Cadet Unit also has two Officer Cadets are currently at Ohakea to gain their Commissions. Anastasia Tinsel and John Donnelly will be hands on with the day to day running of the of the Unit in the New Year. “It’s great to have some fresh ideas and new enthusiasm”, says Unit Commander Rachel Elliot. Rachel Logue was also recently selected as one of just ten cadets from the NZ Cadet Corps to join Exercise Haigs Cadets 18. This is a joint exercise run by the Middlesex, North West London Sector ACF and Leicestershire Northamptonshire and Rutland ACF. The main aim of the exercise is to commemorate the end of World War 1 and will include ceremonial duties in the UK and ceremonial duties, visits and battlefield study tour in Belgium and France. Exercise HAIG's consists of cadets from: UK, Australia, NZ, Barbados and India. With the Corps, A/CDTSGT (Acting Sergeant) Logue left early this month and part of the exercise will include Armistice Day commemorations and wreath-laying in Hyde Park, London, In Belgium, Tyne Cot Cemetary, Ypres in Belgium, Le Quesnoy, and the NZ Memorial in Messene. The trip lasted a total of two weeks and Rachel had to raise $3,500 towards her expenses for which she says a huge thanks to RSA clubs Wellsford, Hakaru, Hakaru Womens, Northern District and Northern District Womens. Last word to Rachel Elliott who says “we are still here and are still achieving great things. It says a lot for our unit and even more for our cadets that they are being selected for these events and amazing opportunities”. |
