Scene & HeardFines rile drivers
Back to school means a sigh of relief for some but several others taking their kids to school were none too happy being scaptured by the speed camera close to the school along Insley St. Some were only just over the 50kmh limit but there is no leeway now and it’s there for a reason – the safety of your kids. Ag Day family fun Ag Day at Mangawhai Beach School is where it all happens, Labour weekend Saturday. Calves, lambs, pony rides, crafts and models made lovingly by the kids, music, novelties, crazy rides and things to do – and food. It’s easy to find. Just follow the crowd and get along there and support this major school fundraiser. Annual floral & craft show Yes, it’s show season. The Annual Mangawhai Women's Institute Floral & Craft Show is to be held Friday October 30 at the Mangawhai Village Library Hall. Classes for all ages and abilities. Keith and Marita Draper feel they have done their time and will be leaving a lasting legacy for some new cheese and food guru to carry on. Kaiwaka is a growing area and this little business has a countywide reputation. School successes Olivia Platt won the ‘Most promising ballet dancer’ over all ages at the recent Northland ballet competitions as well as several other trophies. Cory Vercoe competed to a high standard at the Sticky Johnson Primary School Surf Champs. Congrats to Hannah Fisher who did extremely well at the Northland Arts Vocal Comps with high placings in each category against classes of up to 17 competitors. And we can’t leave out Kayla Sharp, our Hyundai TV advert Princess. Great work Kayla. Get lost! Plan next trip with travel night Feel you need a trip away to recharge your batteries? You are all invited to another Mangawhai Travel Night at the Mangawhai Club, Wednesday October 21 from 7pm. Focus of the night is The Americas. Plus quality preloved stock – clothing, homeware, glassware and free book exchange. Take a country drive along to Bagnall Rd, off Cove Rd. Tasty raffle win In a novel fundraiser the Mangawhai Toy Library raised over $700 for a new storage shed with this years’ raffle which was won by artist Sarah C. who won a fine dining dinner for six in the comfort of her own home catered by the Toy Library team. Big thanks to Fresh, Frog & Kiwi, Mangawhai Meats, Kaiwaka Cheese, Lochiel Wines and local caterer Hollie Shields for donations of goodies. A huge thanks to Sarah C also for her efforts on the night.
