Boar hunters win in wild weather

12082-auctioneer-Dave-Lincoln
PIGGING OUT: Local auctioneer Dave Lincoln sells wild pork to the highest bidder.

Despite having to contend with some pretty rugged weather, the hunters won out over the pigs in the inaugural boar hunt held by the Point Curtis Cruising Club at Three Furlongs Hotel, Kaiwaka, last weekend.

In true Kiwi spirit, hunters roamed far and wide to find prize-winning pork with one pig caught at Kaeo and another in the Coromandel. However, the men were upstaged on the Saturday with the heaviest pig prize going to Julie Lambert. Heaviest overall went to Cody Grey of Okaihau.

Eels too proved fairly elusive for the kids but Koby Worsell was able to land a 3.75kg beauty. No doubt he’ll be going back for another one next year.

All pigs were checked by a MAF officer for signs of TB then, with all clear, they were auctioned off by regular local auctioneer Dave Lincoln, most selling in the $60-$70 range – not a lot for those who know how to prepare the real down home wild pork.

Point Curtis Commodore Wayne Leslie and publican Vic Birkenhead agreed it was a good result despite the weather and plan to make it a regular annual event.

Great sponsorship support saw some good prizes donated and a keen crowd gathered for the weigh-in and late afternoon entertainment.

The Point Curtis Cruising Club offer a big thanks to all who supported the first hunt, including sponsors 3 Furlongs Hotel, TB Free NZ, Game Gear, Renton Roofing, PGG Wrightson (Wellsford), RD1 (Wellsford & Maungaturoto), Reel Roofing, Elders (Wellsford), Wellsford Barber ‘Daggs’, Spot On Liquor (Wellsford), Coast to Coast Vets, Topuni Timber, Wellsford Sports & Leisure, RW & DL Hastie, CJ Motors (Wellsford), Hunting & Fishing (Warkworth), Phil Keen Concrete, Mangawhai Vet Clinic and Maungaturoto Butchery.
