Cadets to represent NZ in SingaporeNZ REPS: Back left, escort officer Jason Kingi, SSGT Sam Bridge, SGT Talbot Kupa. At front, SSGT Tahlia Howard and SGT Renee Johnson. New Zealand Cadet Forces take part in an International Cadet Exchange Programme in Singapore each year, along with ten other countries throughout the world. Each country will send ten cadets and two escort officers for an amazing 10-day experience in December this year. All cadets within NZ can apply to enter this exchange but they have to be recommended by their unit commander then be signed off by their area co-ordinator before the Cadet Corps Association makes a selection. They have to be the very best cadets because they will be representing their country. This year Mangawhai Cadet Unit have had an incredible four cadets and one escort officer selected, leaving just six spaces for the rest of the country. The local cadets selected are SSGT Tahlia Howard, SSGT Sam Bridge, SGT Talbot Kupa, SGT Renee Johnson along with escort officer 2LT Jason Kingi. “They are extremely excited about this experience and also the fact that this group of cadets get to share it with each other,” says unit commander Sandra Grayson. “The four cadets have also been selected for the skills team to defend their national title this year, so between studying for exams, having part time jobs and training every weekend they are extremely busy.” Each cadet has to contribute $1000 towards their trip so are fundraising with sausage sizzles, raffles, chocolate sales, and community jobs. “These cadets will be outstanding representatives for our community and country,” added Ms Grayson proudly. |
