New series for junior squashOne of Whangarei’s premier squash coaches is now offering an exciting new junior squash series, with the thoughts of busy parents and children in mind. Squash coach Jared Gravatt has formed a partnership with Stirling Sports Whangarei in a bid to grow junior squash in Northland. The new Stirling Sports Junior One Day series is designed to offer an alternative to the often costly and time consuming 2-3 day junior tournaments often found on a tournament calendar each year. “Although these longer tournaments are great for juniors already playing competitively, the longer format often proves to be too much for juniors new to squash,” says Jared. Jared coaches at clubs throughout Northland including Kamo, Whangarei, Mid Western, Maungaturoto, Wellsford and Dargaville, and delivers a Squash in Schools program for Northland Squash. “I see too often talent wasted because juniors who are new to squash don’t know how to get involved in competitive play, this ultimately leads to juniors moving on to other sports where competitive play is easier,” he says. The series will be run on Sundays to allow for kids with other Saturday sport commitments to still enter and will target the many juniors playing club level squash throughout Northland who may otherwise slip through the gaps and move on to other sports. “I am really passionate about squash as a sport and I just want to share that enthusiasm with some of our wonderful sport-mad kids in the region. “Working around Saturday sports can be a huge challenge for tournament organisers, but I have started this series with that in mind,” says Jared. |
