Steering Group plan for Mangawhai ParkMangawhai residents are welcoming news that a community initiated and led Steering Group has been formed to work with locals and existing user groups to develop a vision for the future of Mangawhai Park. Well-known and respected local identity, Jim Wintle, will play a key role and has agreed to chair the Steering Group. Architect David Wingate has also agreed to volunteer his time to assist in the development of the plan. The Kaipara District Council will take a back seat, providing the project with any administrative support it needs. The Mangawhai Activity Zone and the Mangawhai Historical Society now call Mangawhai Park home and a number of other organisations including the St John Ambulance Association and the Arts Group are keen to add their number to the prominent site. The Steering Group will also hold a series of consultation meetings to ask the community what the park should look like and how it should be used in the future. “The community as a whole will have the final say,” says Jim Wintle. The Steering Group is also looking at how the park can be connected to the different parts of Mangawhai. Initial meetings have been held with representatives of the different community groups that currently occupy sections of the park. This has included the St John Ambulance Association who is keen to see an ambulance station in the park. The park is situated on Molesworth Drive and for a number of years the community has asked that an overall plan be presented to avoid development in an ad hoc manner. |
