Eleven big days of music at Mangawhai Tavern

Whatever your musical choice, Mangawhai Tavern has it on the menu over the holiday period with a virtual non-stop parade of musical giants from home and abroad. Variety is the spice of life and it’s all at Mangawhai Tavern summer 2012/13!

Beginning on Boxing Day, eight strong and straight outta the Waikato, Katchafire have been at the forefront of NZ reggae for some ten years. Now making serious inroads in the US, the band return to their natural environment in support of their most recent album On The Road Again.
Best known for their powerhouse live shows, complete with incredible vocal harmonies and insane musical precision, they kick off Christmas in Mangawhai together with Ladi6, our own homegrown soul diva returning with her dynamic and ever-evolving live show to thrill the locals.

Jimmy Barnes is back at one of his favourite haunts. The power and Irish energy needs little introduction but you’d better be early to get tickets as this year he shares billing with our own Gin Wigmore. "It will be a summer of good old rock n roll! I look forward to seeing Jimmy Barnes in action and take a few tips from a true master of music," says the multi award-winner.

DEC 28
West Auckland act Yebiisu are back on stage after being here just a couple of months ago, delivering a soulful mix of reggae, funk and ska, powered by the vocals of Jayme Wallace.

DEC 29
After a big week and direct from the US of A, Seasick Steve entertains with deep southern busker-type blues like you’ve never heard before. Whatever or wherever it is, Steve’s been there and dunnit! Multi-talented from a Fender to a one-string guitar, his stories and music will leave you seasick too.

Col Jones returns with his Joe Cocker Tribute. It’s not the real thing but could be even better as he revitalises all the old and bold Cocker music you  know and love.

New Year’s Eve is a night for everyone opening with Oceania Storm, a 10 piece reggae band with three lead singers (two female and one male) who have unique vocal ranges, and combine to give powerful and rich harmonies. Their line-up includes Richard Tali from Ardijah on saxophone, flute, and guitars, and Lisiate Langi on drums from Three Houses Down. Then see in the New Year with three New Zealand Divas in Anika Moa, Boh Runga and Hollie Smith – three different styles but guaranteed to bring the house down.

New Years Day sees locals Tempist Fujit back on stage. Once again it’s a free show and they are a great covers group.

JAN 2
Free is the name of the game and the New Year continues with The Damage – served up with hot spit roast on the deck.

JAN 3
Back into the bigtime with the heavyweight kings of rock as the evergreen and ever-popular Shihad head another top billing with I Am Giant and King Cannons. They’ve toured with some big bands so expect big sounds and lots of action.

Are you still with us? Kick back with Riqi Harawira and Franko Heke – homegrown Kiwi music, good entertainers and definitely understated.

JAN 5
Bring the holiday to a close with Kora. Just back from Oz and the release of their latest album Light Years, the techno-funk stands them apart as a Kiwi band proving the family that plays together, stays together. Alongside is The Nudge pie – a concoction of a blues and rock base, with a deep swamp filling, and a raucous party crust.
