Gardening for good healthNow is the time of year to be enjoying those fresh, seasonal vegetables straight from the garden. Recently a DVD was screened by Sunshine Organics entitled Back to Eden. Much of the DVD is about soil preparation and mulching in the garden. You can use anything from grass clippings, straw, wood chips and even stones. Mulching reduces water loss from evaporation by the sun and also absorbs extra moisture in heavy rain. Grass clippings are easy to use and a reapplication every few weeks around plants ensures the mulch remains over the soil. Wood chips are a very good mulch material as well. All-purpose bark is another good medium too – not so easy to spread but it decomposes into compost over time so serves a dual purpose. At Sunshine Organics we sell a range of young vege plants, flowers and herbs. We also have a limited range of organic seed for sale. Be inspired to start your own garden for summer. We also have books that will help you get started. The results can be very satisfying as well as healthy. Online at www.sunshineorganics.co.nz |
