Tanekaha turns it on
A glorious Labour Weekend Saturday saw over a hundred people assemble for the official opening of the newly established Tanekaha walking track. With generous access granted through Maranui adjoining farmlands, the entry point is just three kilometres up King Rd. A five minute walk takes ramblers to the new swing bridge from where the track proper really begins. Depending on degree of fitness, pace and inclination it’s an 80 minute trek to the top through some fabulous bush. Arriving after about an hour at a lookout point affording some equally fabulous views over Mangawhai and the coast to the east and the coveted bush-clad Bryndrwyns to the west, the pinnacle is the trig on the Brynderwyn ridge above Echo Valley. Again the labour of love by a number of Mangawhai’s finest has added yet another walkway to the list and though parts of the track may be a little dicey in wet weather our trusty track builders have stepped the steepest pinches in the interests of safety. The crowd was welcomed by Gordon Hosking on behalf of the construction team, then the track was blessed by local Kaumatua Ben de Theirry and the ribbon cut by DoC representative Alistair Drake. Among the attendees was Jean Goldschmidt, instigator and organiser of Mangawhai’s famed Walking Weekend who was again complimentary of the track, the work achieved by the volunteer workforce and the goodwill of all concerned to turn a plan into a reality. Be they hikers, trampers or just afternoon ramblers one can imagine this track getting a lot of traffic over the summer period. |
