Did You Know?
Museum home to the arts
Mangawhai Singers, under the capable baton of Christine Bygrave, also deserve a medal following their successful Spring Song Festival at the new museum. Sold out for both performances, the audiences were high in their praise and will be hoping it may become an annual event.
The premiere of film footage from Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition is also likely to attract a large audience. This will be shown on Saturday November 3, so make a diary entry now as tickets will be on sale soon.
Carver wins award
Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Art Awards exhibition at the Kauri Museum has closed, and the votes counted for the Public Choice Award – “Bowl” by David van Diepen.
Mangawhai website
Did you know that there is a ‘Magical Mangawhai ‘ website? It is a community website with links to other community websites throughout New Zealand, and you can list an event, or your business, for free! Go to www.magicalmangawhai.co.nz to take advantage of this opportunity to spread your word.
Get Ramble tickets early
Early-bird tickets are now on sale for the Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble over the weekend of November 10/11. This is a major fundraiser for local Plunket and kindergarten centres, and just gets better every year. It’s just $15 if you purchase before Labour weekend, so call in to one of the following to secure your ticket: Naja Garden Centre, Mangawhai Books and Gifts, Jaques in Kaiwaka, Woody’s Winners in Wellsford, or i-Site in Warkworth. There’s 20 private gardens to explore…
Going cuckoo
And from our bird lady, Sioux Plowman: Reports of shining cuckoo are increasing. And from Alaska, reports that conditions have been excellent for the godwits to leave on their journey back here to us. Juveniles are expected to be arriving soon; they do not come back with adults but leave in groups on their own.
Lots to do on Labour Weekend
It’s not too late to have a bit of a sort out for the white elephant stall at Mangawhai Beach School Ag Day. Good quality saleable items are very welcome, and can be left at the school. Labour Weekend promises to be action-packed, with the very popular Ag Day, markets, Art Trail, opening of the Tanekaha Track, Fire Brigade ‘Fire-Up’ (get those entries in), Beach & Country Market at the Domain and more!
Bless the animals
Christ The King Anglican Church is celebrating St Francis day on Sunday October 7 by having a ‘Blessing of the Animals’. You are invited to bring your pets along to the service at 9.30am, with a morning tea to follow. Everyone is welcome. The church is on Molesworth Drive, where the new church is under construction.
Snippets…
Did you know the ‘old’ museum in the Village is now officially closed? Volunteers are now busy archiving and e-chiving the contents, sorting, and preparing them for exhibition.
Gary Smith (Mangawhai Pottery) has started firing locally sourced clay – from his home driveway actually!
Kaipara District Council has agreed to extend its smoke free policy from council-administered playgrounds to include all council-administered parks and sports grounds. This came into effect last Sunday, September 30.
And wasn’t it great to see Jess (Kakariki), Rick, and baby Layne in the Keep Calm and Carry On TV series. Outstanding parents!
Gold for Millars!
Millars 2010 Syrah has won gold! How good is that? The prestigious New Zealand International Wine Show attracts several thousand entries, and this year was no exception. Millars Vineyard has gained a silver before, but being awarded a gold medal, especially as there was a strong showing of Australian reds at the competition, has really showcased the quality of their 2010 Syrah. Winemaker Rob Cameron – who has his own label Invivo, along with working for Lochiel and Millars – can take a big bow too! Demand is strong for Millars Syrah,
but it is still available locally.
