Coastal course challenges all levelsHave you discovered the Waipu Golf Course yet? Situated on State Highway 1 between Waipu and Ruakaka, just 84 kms from the Puhoi tunnel at the gateway to Northland, this all-weather links-style course presents fabulous views of Bream Bay and the off shore islands. It offers a challenge to golfers of all levels with a shorter course for the novice, a mid-distance course for the regular golfer and a longer “Tiger” course for the experts and big hitters. The fairways are well groomed and the greens are simply the best. However, head into the rough and you could find yourself with the odd problem. For less than $60 a month you can be a full playing member – but there are lots of other membership options and green fee players are always welcome. Be sure to look seaward from all the elevated tees across the beautiful panorama of Bream Bay with Whangarei Heads and the Hen and Chicken Islands in the background. With walking access to the beach, you can bring the family, pick up some lunch and a coffee in the clubhouse Links View Cafe and head off down to the beach for a swim after your round. Or simply relax on the deck and take in the spectacular vista. The clubhouse is open 7 days a week 8am–5pm and visitors are always welcome. Visit online at www.waipugolfclub.org.nz. The course is in tip top condition having just hosted the National Secondary Schools Championships followed by the National U19 Men’s Strokeplay Championships. Also coming up on the calendar, the weekend of September 15-16 is the 27th Annual Bream Bay Classic, an Order of Merit Tournament over 54 holes open to all single figure players. There are three divisions, Men and Masters who play off the very challenging Black Course, and Ladies who play off a slightly shorter course. Not to forget the regular golfer, there is a Ladies 18 hole Teams Day, Thursday September 27 which is always a popular event. Call the friendly ladies at the golf shop or better still, drop in – have a game and some lunch and refreshments. |
