Have loose change ready for collectorsBY JULIA WADE
Two well-known volunteers want to pre-warn the people of Mangawhai that they will probably be receiving a visit next week from what may at first glance appear to look like a pair of giant, wandering daffodils. ‘Daff and Dill’ aka serial volunteers John Phillis and Ken Rayward, will be walking the streets on August 31, calling on workplaces and local hangouts to seek out cash donations for the Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser, Daffodil Day. “No place is safe,” Dill says. “Businesses, building sites, cafes even the knitting club will get a visit.” This is the second time the dedicated local men have wandered Mangawhai in the name of cancer. In 2017 they collected over $1100 for the cause and are expecting to do more this year. With one in three people affected in some way with the disease, donations to the Cancer Society are vital to support scientific research into the causes and treatments as well as education, awareness and support programmes. Daff and Dill are asking local workers and residents to mark the importance of the day by having some loose change handy for donating. “Not having your wallet or purse with you will be no excuse, we’ll just escort you home,” Dill jokes. “But seriously, we just want to remind people to take some spare cash with them on Friday 31; it’s for an incredibly good cause.” Daff and Dill with Daffodil Day Mangawhai coordinator Paulette Phillis before last years donation walk, are ready to get people’s attention again for a life-saving cause. |
