Gates gone
Two farm gates were stolen from a property on Coal Hill Road on the night of August 14.

“In the words of Billy T James, the thieves must have ‘taken offense’,” Senior Constable Graham Gough says. “But seriously, it is a popular item for thieves and we want to advise people to mount the gates so the hinges are one up, one down and to burr the end of the hinges so the gates can’t just be lifted off.”

Domestic arrest
A 32-year-old man was arrested following a serious domestic incident at a Te Arai address on the night of August 11. The man in question was due in court on August 17 charged with injury with intent, arson and possession of a rifle.

Captain ship-wrecked
The captain of a 40,000 tonne logging ship is facing a 12 month jail term or $10,000 fine, after being arrested for intoxication at Port Northland on August 4.

Police were called in to assist with a breath test after Maritime NZ were contacted by a pilot on the ship who suspected the captain to be under the influence while attempting to berth the vessel the ‘Shansi’.

The 53-year-old English captain had ’an exceptionally high reading’ and was subsequently arrested. He appeared in court the following day and was remanded on bail.
