Tech service helps join the dotsThey say there’s nothing more permanent than a temporary arrangement. As pop-up shops from shipping containers are now becoming quite common the little black building on Molesworth Drive opposite Before Six has barely raised eyebrows though the name has had a few people thinking. Tom Dot Com sounds obviously tech-related though and ex-Auckland couple Tom and Allisha Rutherford-Lay are among those to make the move to Mangawhai while also bringing a service that will find plenty of takers as the population grows and we become more tech-reliant. “Technology is a big part of our lives now,” says Tom. “We’re basically forced into joining the crowd in some form or another but some need a little help coming to grips with all the intricacies of cellphones, PCs, laptops or tablets so that’s a part of the help we offer.” The store also operates as an internet cafe providing tutorials, with printing, scanning and copying services available as well as design services and website construction, advice and even call-outs if your gadgets let you down at a crucial time. Then for those who need it from time to time, Tom Dot Com also provides a clean-up and repair service. While business gathers momentum Tom is still commuting part-time to Auckland but Allisha is there to mind the shop which opens six days a week. There’s a lot happening in this small space on Molesworth Drive at the Village but a phone appointment may be best as a large part of their business is currently through callouts. n tomdotcom.nz or 021 127 9836
