Mangawhai cadet receives top St John awardA local Mangawhai St John Cadets member has achieved yet another first in a long list of successes for the group, being the sole Northlander to earn a prestigious award.
Sixteen-year-old St John gold cadet, Samantha Tinsel, is the only northland district cadet in 2020 to be presented the Grand Prior, the highest award besides bravery cadets can be granted in the St John organisation. At a ceremony in Auckland’s government house on August 8 Samantha, along with ten other northern region cadets, was presented her GP by St John grand chancellor John Whitehead and governor general, Dame Patsy Reddy. Since the group’s inauguration back in 2016, Mangawhai’s cadets have consistently been high-achievers, coming away from competitions with a range of awards including winning the coveted Spirit of St John Trophy in 2018 –for the values of friendliness, being respectful, hard working, positive and enthusiastic – and have won ‘Division of the Year in Northland for two years running. Founder and leader of Mangawhai’s Cadets, and district youth manager for Northland, Anastasia Tinsel, also co-created two new St John awards, the Emerald and Sapphire Shields which were trialled in Mangawhai before being rolled out nationwide. Tinsel, who is also proud mum to Samantha, is naturally delighted by her daughter’s achievement. “I’m super proud of her hard work,” she says. “She’s such a fantastic role model for the younger cadets who were just astounded about the whole thing!” A proud moment for an amazing achievement.
