The busy summer season continues for lifeguards at Mangawhai Heads with visitor numbers increasing in the last week after the bad weather over New Year..

 

Figuratively speaking there is no way to win in a battle against a bureaucracy. Following the decision prior to Christmas that the Mangawhai Ratepayers & Residents Association (MRRA) had failed in its appeal in the High Court I thought I’d look back at the whole scenario.

The number of boat hulls checked for marine pests will almost quadruple in Northland this summer with local authority divers poised to inspect about 1500 vessels at popular holiday spots.

Northland Regional Council Chairman Bill Shepherd says as well as a big increase in hull inspections (about 400 were done last summer) the region's marinas are also playing their part in the war on marine nasties and are now insisting on tougher entry criteria.

In a town where job-sharing and long commutes to work are par for the course, it was with disappointment that ‘After 3’ school classes were to be discontinued from late last year through the withdrawal of funding by Mangawhai Beach School.

All these questions and more will be answered by the Art n Tartan team at an ‘Expressions of Interest’ meeting held to welcome all those artists, designers, models and helpers who wish to be involved in the iconic 2016 Waipu Museum Art n Tartan Awards.
