Sustainable Kaipara launches new climate change series22 Nov, 2021
Sustainable Kaipara, with support from Kaipara District Council, announces the launch of Rising to the Challenge, a series of online conversations and in-person events that aim to start conversations on climate change. Rising to the Challenge was born through a collaboration between Sustainable Kaipara and Kaipara District Council exploring how to help people engage in climate change, with a goal of inspiring locals to start taking action for the transition to a low carbon society. Sustainable Kaipara director Sarah Bray says the event series is designed to spark discussions around climate change and what it means for Kaipara. “The series highlights the impacts for our region and opportunities for action. We’ll be speaking with a diverse range of people living here in Kaipara, and getting their insights to help start thinking about what the future means with a climate change lens.” Mayor Dr Jason Smith says Kaipara needs to be prepared for climate change. “Kaipara District’s climate is changing now and will continue to change for generations to come. The Rising to the Challenge series will shine a light on some incredible people we have in our communities already working to meet some of the impacts of climate change, and shows us that action comes in many shapes and sizes.” “Along with the recently-adopted Kaipara Te Hua Climate Smart Framework, supporting this important series is just one of many recent ways Council hopes to prepare our people for the future and the impacts of climate change in our own back yard,” says Mayor Smith. The first video in the series features local surfer, teacher, musician Tony Baker. You can view it and others in the series on Sustainable Kaipara’s website. Over the coming months keep an eye on Sustainable Kaipara’s website, Facebook or Instagram for the release of more videos. An in-person event will be held in early 2022, details to come. Sustainable Kaipara is supported by the Ministry for the Environment Waste Minimisation Fund and Kaipara District Council.
