The weather gods smiled as a record-breaking 180 amazing cars and bikes revved up for the annual Black Swamp Rod Run on January 7.
Following a morning display at Mangawhai Beach School, a cavalcade cruised to Waipu and back to organisers Phil and Sandra Brunt’s Mangawhai orchard for a family fun day under the olives.
Jo, from Hot Shotz Coffee, sold the early morning fix and then jumped on her Harley to join the run.
Spectators set up along the route to hoot and holler and cheer participants on.
Mr Rockabilly Hood and his band, Slick Back Rockabilly, entertained at the orchard suitably themed hits, keeping dancers hopping.
Paparoa Lions proved popular and kept a steady supply of hot food and cold drinks, while kids enjoyed lolly scrambles, water slides and Mr Whippy ice cream.
Picnic baskets and blankets were scattered throughout the orchard as people relaxed and talked pistons and carburettors.
“Thanks again to all those who travelled far and wide with their wonderful machines to share this event in Mangawhai,” said Sandra Brunt. “It was awesome to see familiar faces return and welcome new enthusiasts. Thanks also to all of our volunteers who made the day happen.”
The next Black swamp Rod Run is set for January 6, 2018.
