Emu gives residents the runaround

With duck shooting season upon us, residents of Sail Rock Drive could have been forgiven for thinking the mountain had come to Mohammed as a large feathered bird strutted blithely up their street.

Resident Mary Kelliher caught the sight and subsequent capture on video but had earlier rung the fire brigade who, after initial bewilderment, made a heroic arrest. Not the most delicate operation but we’re sure their methodology will improve with practice. The beast was returned, unharmed, to its enclosure on Mangawhai Heads Road.

1. Ok, maybe a piece of bread will do the trick?

2. Maybe not. Lets just push it into a corner.

3. Look out for those long sharp feet!

4. Gotcha! Hang on while we secure it with rope.

5. Finally under control and safe in the van.
