One volunteer mingling in the crowd at the recent Volunteer Networking Evening, was Mangawhai’s very own national award-winning bookkeeper, Michelle Morrison.

Presented with Emerging Bookkeeper of the Year at the industry’s recent 2020 Excellence Awards held in Hawkes Bay at the Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers annual gala dinner, the owner of local business Blue Wave Bookkeeping & Consultancy was recognised by her peers for helping small business owners through Covid, streamlining financial systems through the use of technology and celebrating her journey as a bookkeeper to date.

“I am very proud to be recognised by a professional organisation like ICNZB,” she says. “They have many bookkeepers who have helped small businesses across the country so to be selected out of many is a great honour.”

Immersed in the accounting profession for 24 years, Morrison has gained valuable experience in both New Zealand and overseas financial departments including working for Manukau City Council, and was involved with the 2010 amalgamation of Auckland’s ‘Supercity’. Creating Blue Wave while still living in Pukekohe before her family moved to Mangawhai at the beginning of the year, the passionate bookkeeper has a desire to offer accessible personalised service for local small businesses, as well as companies around the country.
“It is important the technology fits the business and the number of choices out there can be daunting,” she says. “I can assist with all aspects of accounts processing including system advisory and business planning. If you are a cafe, a builder or an animations company you will have different requirements and I will help you find the right technology and ensure you are up and running.”

As the bookkeeping profession is now classed as an essential service, Morrison has also provided support, advice and guidance for her clients through the shaky times of Covid-19.

On top of growing her new business, the active 47-year-old, who enjoys water skiing, fishing, hockey, running and a game of golf, also donates her know-how to Mangawhai Information Centre, overseeing the facebook page and helping to organise community events as well as being treasurer for her daughter’s school, Otamatea High.

She says becoming a bookkeeper has granted her the freedom to balance her time between work pressures and her family, and wants to help other business owners who are wrestling with their financial books, to get their systems into shape and get their life back.
“The best part about my job is helping people and achieving positive outcomes which is reflected in their life outside of work,” she says. “If you’re struggling with invoicing, GST or making confident business decisions, I’m only a phone call away.”
