Hunters lured by big moneyThick wet underbrush, muddy creeks, a bunch of baying dogs and Swandris are a match made in heaven for dedicated pig hunters determined to get a slice of the $13,000 worth of prizes on offer at the 2016 Kaiwaka Boar Hunt.
Buoyed by past successful events, organiser Vic Birkenhead has amassed great prize packages for both senior and junior sections plus new initiatives to spread the prizes around as many participants as possible. Held from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 August, the heaviest boar will earn its captor a handy $800 cash. But for those who also competed in the Maungaturoto Boar Hunt on Queens Birthday weekend, combined with the Kaiwaka event, can earn a $3000 prize package for heaviest average weight of pigs caught from both competitions, which includes a double alloy dog box, Garmin GPS tracking gear and Gang Gear clothing. Not into pig hunting? Well, snapper and pheasant is the name of the game. A $500 prize is on the line for the heaviest snapper and an extra $200 if the angler is a member of Pt Curtis Cruising Club, also the recipient of the profits, while the heaviest pheasant carries a $250 prize tag. Kids (under 14s) are included too with free entry to the snapper and eel competition carrying $500 worth of cash and prizes. The $30 entry fee for seniors includes a pork or spit roast meal and the good folk at Three Furlongs Bar & Grill will keep things moving with food, beverages and music on Saturday and Sunday when a number of spot and novelty prizes will also be drawn. Ticket outlets: Three Furlongs Bar & Grill, Wellsford Sports & Leisure, Thirsty Liquor Wellsford, Tackle & Outdoor Warkworth, GAS Maungaturoto, Paparoa Hotel, Nolas Sports Dargaville, Aratapu Tavern, Hikarangi Hotel, Ruakaka Tavern, or phone organiser Vic Birkenhead on 021 160 9588.
