Wheels turning on Waipu cyclewayAfter much fundraising and hard work, the first stage of the Waipu Cycle and Walkway is complete and to celebrate there will be an official opening on Sunday August 14. The track goes from just out of Waipu township towards Riverview Place. There is a newly installed bridge, which makes the route even more interesting. All are invited to take part by cycling, walking or running along this first section of the walkway, which is planned to end at Waipu Cove. Members of the public are asked to assemble by 10am to be sorted into groups. Should you drive to the event please park in Waipu township and walk along to the NSP carpark where the event is to take place. A blessing ceremony will be held before the ribbon is cut by Whangarei mayor Sheryl Mai. After cyclists and walkers return there will be a sausage sizzle and Zippy’s coffee will be available. A community consultation tent will be on site to allow members of the public to suggest their preferences and ideas for the route of the track onward towards Waipu Cove. n Waipu Cycleway Stage One opening, August 14, 10am, NSP car park Waipu. |
