Kids taking pride in their petsBY ROB POOLEY
Mangawhai Beach School is big on pet and animal care. Last December it was Kiwi Care Mufti Day with morning tea and funds donated to Marunui Kiwi Reserve. Then a Project Jonah fundraiser. Now it’s the turn of all pets to benefit from a school mufti day collection being organised by friends Pippa Meagher and Zoe Farmer. In a way pets are like people, some don’t always get the attention they deserve especially in busy working families. Most families have a cat and/or a dog but co-organiser Pippa has dogs, cats, sheep, ducks, cows and calves, a pony and just recently a Kunekune piglet. The school mufti day on Friday June 29 is to raise funds or give just a $2 donation or pet food or any pet needs. Cat or dog food (tinned or pellets), bird seed, cage bird needs, pet bedding, maybe a pet basket for some who don’t have a comfortable place to sleep, are some suggestions for donations. The proceeds are then sent to SPCA Whangarei for distribution. Pippa and Zoe are busily promoting interest in their cause which is now in its seventh year. The number of families in Mangawhai is growing, the number of pupils is growing as is our pet population so its good to see our local school kids showing they care. Pippa Meagher (left) and Zoe Farmer want to raise awareness about pet care. |
