Dog attacks a growing concern

dead goat-585On the morning of Saturday June 18, small block residents of Atkin Road, Mangawhai, awoke to a scene of carnage.

During the night or early hours two black medium-sized dogs set out on a murderous path across four properties leaving a number of dead and injured sheep and goats in their wake.

One goat, a hand reared pet for two young girls, had its throat ripped out. Two sheep were killed. Others were so badly mauled they may still need to be humanely destroyed.

A number of chickens have also been on the receiving end of similar attacks.

One neighbour opened her door only to be confronted by a growling dog.

Resident Gonda Hawken urgently contacted the Dargaville-based animal control officer, but there was little they could do, and that photos of the dog or dogs were needed.

Locals believe they know the location of the dogs but the owner is adamant theirs were not the culprits.

“If you live in the Atkin Road area and you think it could be your dog, please get rid of it,” says Gonda. “If you had seen the mess these poor sheep and goats were in, you would be horrified and believe me, it doesn't matter what you do they will be out doing it again if they are loose at night.”

This latest attack highlights the growing problem of uncontrolled dogs in the area say some locals.

Dog owners are being urged to check their dogs, especially their teeth and muzzles, for fibre or wool evidence, and make sure they are tied up at night.

Under the Dog Control Act 1996, dogs responsible for attacks on people or other animals can be seized. The dog owner can be charged with an offence under the Act and may be liable on summary conviction to a fine. In addition, the owner is also liable for any damages caused by the dog. The dog may be required to wear a muzzle and in a worst-case scenario may be destroyed.
