Skaters on cameraIn an effort to maintain the profile of skateboarding in Mangawhai, local skatemeister Daniel Hawes organised a photo competition, #mangawhaisnaps. Daniel bought the ten point-and-shoot cameras online himself, gave them to the first ten shutterbugs who entered with the only condition that pics had to depict action at the Mangawhai bowl. Ten 25-shot disposable camers can throw up a multitude of interesting shots and some of the results were quite spectacular. The winner was 6-year-old Emma Lay, whose prize was a complete skateboard setup with Heroin deck, Primitive wheels, Ace trucks, Spitfire bearings and independent hardware – the real deal – all courtesy of Bammas Surf and Leisure Shop. We hear Emma is hardly off her skateboard since she got it. Other prizes included funky apparel, shirts, singlets and hoodies donated by local artist Mark Graham under his Phobos Cartel label, nick nacks from The Camera Shop in Warkworth and Mangawhai Skateboard lessons. “Picking winners wasn’t easy,” said Daniel,” but we will be sharing the best ones on Facebook throughout the next couple of weeks and also running a ‘people’s choice’ comp.” |
