New life for landmark buildingVicki Nicholas and her partner have recently assumed stewardship of the former Waipu fire station on The Braigh and are currently in the throes of giving the old girl a facelift and restoring her to her former glory under the name of the Red Door Gallery.
Vicki will be running the gallery which will include art, pottery, furniture and other interesting works. “There is a bit to do,” says Vicki referring mainly to paint “but it is a beaut structure that lends itself well to what we have planned and it’s important to maintain the integrity of the iconic building.” With no dedicated outlet for art in the area the couple feel the time is right for their venture and word of mouth has already created a waiting list of those interested in displaying their wares. This means interest will be maintained as art pieces will be rotated regularly. Vicki is excited to announce the opening of the art gallery set for Saturday October 26, with as many as eight exhibitors diplaying their work – a celebration of art and a landmark that has served the community so well in the past. The gallery invites enquiries now from additional would-be exhibitors with some share spaces available for the November, December, January 13 week season. Contact reddoorgallerywaipu@gmail.com. |
