Daffodil Day fundraiser turns 30Cancer Society is approaching a milestone, celebrating its 30th anniversary of Daffodil Day on August 28, with funds raised helping continued support in the local area.
Services provided in Mangawhai and surrounding areas include Cancer Society nurse Maggie Prentice, who is available to guide patients and their loved ones to the services that are available to them, and to advocate on behalf of cancer patients. Despite losing significant funding due to Covid-19 cancellations of major fundraising events, the Cancer Society redesigned its services to support people remotely throughout the lockdown and provide some essential face-to-face services too. “Now that we are out of lockdown our services are open to the public and our support group is back up and running,” says Cancer Society Northland community fundraiser Tasha Judd. “The support group is open to cancer patients and their whanau to meet monthly with Maggie.” Nurses can come to your home for a face-to-face meeting to help assess patient and whanau/family needs, and can also discover the treatment options, side effects and explain what is happening in a language that everyone can understand. Cancer Society Domain Lodge is the free accommodation for Northland cancer patients receiving treatment in Auckland, ensuring easy access to facilities. “Our driving service also means that patients can get to and from their appointments, helping to take the pressure off whanau and friends,” adds Tasha. Cancer support group meets monthly every third Tuesday, 1pm -2pm, St John Mangawhai Ambulance Centre, 194 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads.
