Butchery mural gets the chopUnfortunately the mural depicting a historical butchery that graced the eastern wall of the Mangawhai Meat Shop for over a decade is no longer.
Over time the area behind and around the Village block of shops has seen an upsurge in traffic, both cars and delivery trucks, with some parking a little close and nudging the butchery wall. Others backing out rearward have also given it the odd nudge to the point where the wall has become fractured and no longer rain-proof needing significant repair. “Pretty sad really,” says butcher Dan Klink. “It’s a special piece of art work. I guess you could call it iconic but we have had to make repairs so it has had to go at least for now. Insurance will sort the wall initially and the shops will have a new owner from November so we’ll just have to see if they will allow us to put it back to its former glory.” In the meantime it is hoped there will be a barrier of some kind put in place to protect both vehicles and buildings and our award-winning butchery can regain its unique status. |
