Activity Zone makes amazing strides


The recent generous $500,000 grant from the Northland Regional Council will bring about the completion of the beginners area and the back of the flow bowls at the skating centre of the Mangawhai Activity Zone. But while lobbying for funds still continues, the end is in sight says MAZ chairman Colin Gallagher referring to the Street Plaza being the final project to complete the multi-million dollar complex.

The survival of kiwi and their chicks in the Brynderwyns depends on effective trapping and the elimination of predators, particularly stoats and feral cats.

As kiwi extend their territories beyond Marunui Conservation, an intensively trapped area where they were released between 2013 and 2015, it is vital that predator control is undertaken in the wider area to help them survive.

New Zealand’s rarest bird, the tara iti or New Zealand fairy tern, has produced the first egg of the breeding season. 

With fewer than 40 birds, the fairy tern is critically endangered and despite intensive management has teetered on the brink of extinction since the 1970s.
