Flyer aims to inspire waste reduction

BY JULIA WADE

21 MF-KaiLoverecypamphelt-859Tips, guides and methods on how to live ‘greener’ can now be picked up at your local Four Square, council offices and libraries with Kaipara’s new 2019 waste minimisation and recycling guide now available.

Brought to the community by environmental organisation Love Kaipara (LK) the attractive flyer is a useful resource to keep on-hand at work or home.

A collaborative, creative work between LK’s project manager, Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock, and graphic designer Emma McLean, the flyer features waste reduction strategies and guidelines on what items can be recycled in the district, and ‘invites placement on fridges and noticeboards’.

“I hope this 2019 flyer stirs people to reduce waste and move steadily towards the ‘zero waste’ vision,” del la Varis-Woodcock says. “Our intention was to produce an inspirational flyer with imagery of Kaipara beaches, children and families, to connect in readers’ minds the notion that every step taken towards waste reduction is a step taken to care for our environment and for our children’s future.”

Through print, radio and social media, LK also educates school children and the wider community about the importance of waste minimisation. From March 2019, the team branched out their education programme to include a community lesson on the ‘Circular Economy’ which is ‘the goal of designing waste out of the production and consumption process’, LK educator Margaret Baker says.

“It is the direction producers and consumers are now moving in,” she says. “From smart shopping, to repairing, composting, reusing, repurposing and recycling items, I show children how to shrink the amount of rubbish thrown into rubbish bins… teaching the ‘Reduce, Reuse Recycle’ programme is a such a joy; Kaipara kids really get it!”
