Locals take ports awards
The 28th ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Awards were presented recently covering a huge range of sporting codes but also emphasising the talents of our young champions of the future and high achieving participants. 

Among local winners were Tarrin Rous, Rodney College (golf); Billy Richards, Rodney College, (karting); Jayde van Gelden, Bream Bay College (Olympic weightlifting); Maddison Greatorex, Bream Bay College (showjumping)

An Emerging Talent award went to Shay Aull, Bream Bay College (Olympic weightlifting).

Rod Run revs up
The Black Swamp Rod Run is scheduled for January 4, 2020. The increasingly popular rod and classic car display and coastline cruise now attracts over 150 cars every year. Classic car, hot rod and bike enthusiasts – all makes and models – are welcome.

There’s a gold coin public viewing at Mangawhai Domain before 10.45am, then a run to Waipu along some beautiful local coastline. Registered entrants can then attend the annual family fun day at Black Swamp Road where there’s swimming, food music and cold refreshments.

Junior surf season to kick off
Registrations are now open for the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Life Saving Junior Surf Life Saving Programme. The Junior Surf Season kicks off on November 10 and parents are urged to register their children as soon as possible or risk missing out. Open to children 4-13 years-old, the programme is designed to promote water safety, surf sense, fitness, camaraderie and fun in a friendly and safe environment. Throughout the seasons, children progress through age appropriate levels of beach and water skills, building the skills needed to prepare for their Bronze lifeguard award from the age of 14. 

Children 7yrs and over can also choose to participate in regional inter-club carnivals from December and members aged 10-13 can choose to compete at Northern Region Championships in February and National Championships in March 2020.
