Team ready to support new golf club manager

Brad Grimmer 2-815It’s been full circle then just a small deviation that has taken Brad Grimmer to his new role as manager of Mangawhai Golf Club, replacing Steve Hinton. Born and bred in Warkworth, Brad still lives there with wife Holly and will commute daily to Mangawhai.

Brad had his first taste of golf at Mahurangi College, going on to complete a Sports Management degree at Waikato University. The followed work at Warkworth Golf Club, Kristen College in Albany and four years in Europe involved in all aspects of sports management and administration.

A return to New Zealand saw him in a management role at Onehunga Bowling Club, and their merger with Royal Oak Bowling Club.

Now, Brad sees his new Mangawhai role as a step into a more challenging environment, expanding on skills he has gained in previous positions.

“Mangawhai’s a magnificent course, a real challenge-and-reward layout for golfers of all levels,” he says. “It’s a stunning environment, and one of my key objectives is to consolidate the courses status as one of the country’s very best… a brilliant sand-based 18-hole course that’s always in outstanding condition. Now we’re putting plans in place to further enhance our club.
“The thing I’ve really noticed here is the remarkable effort put in by volunteers. There’s always a team of club members ready to step up and undertake any task and they work in superbly with our greenstaff. It must be a Mangawhai thing, a real enthusiasm to do the job and not expect any reward except the satisfaction of a job well done.”

In the role for just a short time has not meant a lot of time to get out on the course and Brad claims his game is still a bit rusty, and he’s unsure if he’ll get back to his best handicap index of 3.6.

“My best ever round was 70 at Warkworth although I did have a 67 with a ringer on the same course. I don’t know if I’ll ever beat that score around Mangawhai but there’s always hope.”

Away from golf Brad and Holly enjoy ongoing home renovation and a bit of gardening. He’s still a Warkworth boy at heart, but a piece of that heart is quickly being claimed by Mangawhai.
