Grand final for Mangawhai apprentice
Long gone are the days when breaking down a side of beef or boning out a side of bacon constituted a butcher, who would wrap an order lovingly in brown paper and hand it over the counter, often including an extra sausage for a special customer.
Ed Said - A little food for thought......
For some, weekly market days are a serious event. This is the day they do their weekly fruit and vege shopping, seeking out the freshest victuals that will keep them fit and healthy for many more markets to come.
Troubled campground faces liquidation
Residents of a locally owned campground are now facing an uncertain future as the company who was responsible for the management of their park has filed for liquidation.
Winter workshops crowd gallery
The last few weeks might have been chilly and wet but for many people in Mangawhai it has been a productive, creative and energising time.
80 years of fun and friendship
A long-established local women’s network focused on friendship, fun and supporting their community commemorated eight decades of togetherness recently.
Commitment to environment and community recognised
Tara Iti Golf Club is thrilled to announce another accolade – GEO Certified status. The certification is administered and assured by the Golf Environment Organisation (GEO), a not-forprofit group dedicated to sustainability in the golf industry.
Wearable art a Scottish showcase
Art ‘n Tartan Supreme Award winning designer Carole Hebberd with her Me and My Shadow creation at the event’s awards evening held a few weeks ago. The design was also first equal in the Scottish Surreal category, and first in People’s Choice.
First NRC information event outlines local and regional issues
Friday July 27 saw the first of several proposed local community events hosted at Langs Beach by Northland Regional Council Coastal South Councilor Rick Stolwerk. Over 60 people turned up to listen to Rick speak on the issues facing the region locally and regionally.
Council proposes new Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Ward
Kaipara District Council is seeking public feedback on its proposal for representation arrangements for the 2019 and 2022 elections. Council adopted its initial proposal and approved public consultation at its meeting on July 26.
MCRC - Protection of environment crucial during project
In his role as environmental manager for Fletcher Acciona – the company sub-contracted to extend the four-lane Northern Motorway (SH1) 18.5km from Johnstone’s Hill Tunnel to just north of the Warkworth township – Jonathan Green was introduced as the guest speaker at the July meeting of Mangawhai Combined Rebus Club.
Councillor Comment - Mistakes of the past should help decision-making
The new roading maintenance contract came into effect on 1 July 2018. The contract has an at-risk monthly payment to incentivise the contractor to meet the required standards.
Atlas strike as pay negotiations break down
Following on the heels of the recent nurse’s strike, the early morning hours in the Brynderwyn hills became the scene for another group of workers who have had enough with low pay and work conditions.
Skin is a mirror of what’s happening beneath
Our skin reflects our inner health, so it is important to eat and drink well. We also need to take a supplement to support the skin. Essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and amino acids all play an important role in keeping our skin healthy.
Domain trouble: New rules not so clear
Ahead of the upcoming August 12 AGM, Mangawhai Domain Society (MDS) members were invited to attend a Special General Meeting (SGM) on June 17 to sanction (or not) new rules proposed by the current Domain Committee (DC).
Worzels World - Grateful to be here
There’s bacon and eggs for breakfast. There is sunshine and rain, friendship, love and laughter. There’s work and there’s play. There’s going to sleep knowing that the day is over, and waking up knowing that one day you will not. There is failure and there is sadness and accepting that these too are part of being. And yes there is just being.
Trust dividend for local initiatives
Once again the Mangawhai Walking Weekend Charitable Trust has raised significant funds to provide support to a number of volunteer community groups and initiatives.
Gardening with Gael - Planting kale, it's not too late
Our vegetable garden out is usually planted and maintained by Box. This year he is too busy building and I have decided that it is up to me to plant some vegetables that we need every day. Looking at the price of cauliflowers and lettuce I wish I had started a little earlier!
Unique fundraising promotion for daffodil raceday
The Daffodil Raceday series for 2018 continues to build on the success of the initiative from the last four years. Originating in Hawke’s Bay in 2014, the Daffodil Raceday initiative has donated more than $150,000 to the NZ Cancer Society.

Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade’s fundraising wall is growing, and the brigade would like to say many thanks to the businesses, individuals and families who have supported them so far.
Dog registration due by end of August
It’s that time of year when your dog registrations are due. All dogs over the age of 12 weeks must be registered by August 31, 2018. If your dog has been registered with Kaipara District Council previously, then a registration renewal notice will have been posted to the last recorded address on Council’s records.
School Ag Day to spread its wings
Through the unfortunate event of the M Bovis cattle disease, Mangawhai School’s Ag Day is losing some of its ‘Ag’. However, few things stay the same indefinitely and organisers have moved their focus slightly into the pet arena ensuring as many pupils as possible are able to take part.
Information day for future volunteers
Locals inspired to join the multitudes of volunteers within Mangawhai but unsure as to the ‘what, when and where’ will have an opportunity to check out all possibilities in one day. On August 18, Mangawhai Club is hosting a Volunteer Open Day where a range of clubs, groups and associations will showcase their organisation and function, as well as the variety of work volunteers could sign up for.
