Did You Know?

Molesworth Drive under construction
If you've been pondering just what is going on, as you wait in response to the Stop/Go controls with the road works on Molesworth Drive, Kaipara District Council has provided a comprehensive answer. Currently the contractor is constructing a stormwater line from the end of the industrial area to a discharge point approximately 60 metres south of Nautical Heights. On completion of this, they will move up the road to install three sumps between Moir Point Rd intersection and the Firth Concrete entrance. Once this work is completed, kerb and channel around Moir Point Rd intersection and the footpath down Molesworth Drive will commence.

The three sumps between Moir Point Rd and Firth Concrete are to collect the stormwater run-off and channel it away from the industrial area. The stormwater line is to collect road stormwater and act in an overflow capacity for the industrial area. The diverting of stormwater is to alleviate floooding of the industrial properties and lessen the flooding into Pohutukawa Place.

The footpath is an extension to the existing one that currently ends just past the bowling club, and willl extend down to the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ). The footpath will improve the safety of pedestrians along this section of Molesworth Drive.

The kerb and channel, and central island at Moir Point Road intersection will serve a number of purposes – channel stormwater, define the intersection more clearly for motorists, and provide a safe location for pedestrians to cross.

This work will be carried out over the next three months.

Casino Royale – what a night!
Looking to raise $20,000 for a covered family picnic and barbecue area, MAZ well and truly surpassed expectation reaching $40,000 at their sell-out gala fundraiser evening. Thanks to the generosity of the many sponsors, huge effort from the organisers, and the absolutely amazing support from those who attended on the night. Simply fantastic!

Bikes break the law
This is not so good..... on Tuesday June 23, many tyre tracks were discovered on the northern end of the sandspit at Mangawhai, probably made on Sunday June 21. There was at least one quad bike, maybe two, and several farm or trail bikes going down the spit on the flat by the lagoons at the northern end. It is believed they gained entry from right along the ocean beach from the south at the Te Arai Point carpark. There is a DoC marginal strip from the carpark right down to the refuge. No vehicles are permitted by law.

The entire sandspit is a wildlife refuge, cared for by DoC, and there are hefty fines for people entering with vehicles. Very soon, NZ dotterels will be making scrapes in preparation for the breeding season then laying eggs in them.

Please, everyone, if you see ANYTHING which worries you on the spit, let us know. We rely on local observers to keep a lookout at all times and appreciate the help received from you all. The following are the numbers to phone: DoC Hotline 0800 362 468; Heather volunteer 431 5413; Jane volunteer 431 5828.

St John in final stages
Been noticing the activity inside the new St John ambulance station? Lot of cleaning and tidying going on, and the Op Shop managers are enjoying setting up the kitchen and accommodation areas with donated goods. Probably be the only station in NZ with a dinner set, matching cups and cutlery!

A rubbish education
Chris Wood, our local 'good sort' who is regularly seen picking up rubbish from the verges, is wondering why people don't keep a bag in their car for rubbish instead of throwing it out the window, and why people pick up their dog poo only to leave the bag on the verge? On the positive side, Chris says he is finding there is less rubbish about lately, so that has to be good.

Forum to be rescheduled
Ill health prevented David Wingate leading the well-attended Art and Architecture Forum in the village hall last week, but organiser Suza Lawrence successfully called on local talented designers and architects to carry the evening – most successful. David will present his ideas at a later date, which will be well advertised.
