Lifeguards show prowess at anniversary longboard eventOver 40 lifeguards converged on Mangawhai Heads on February 18 for the 25th anniversary of the NZ Lifeguard Longboard Nationals.
A small half metre swell didnt deter the field of competitors who came from across the Northern region. In the Open Mens final it was an all Mangawhai Heads affair, with a healthy battle between Matt Scott, Tony Baker, Brendan Lagemaat and Ari Tidyman. Lagemaat eventually claimed his maiden victory in the contest ahead of Baker in 2nd. The Classic Division was a spectacle, with old, heavy and at times wild pre-1970 boards clearing the line up. Last year’s winner Hira Edmonds (Bethells Beach SLSC) was a standout as were Dave Sneyd (MHVLS), Rhys Powell (Omaha SLSC) and John Skirrow (Muriwai SLSC). In the final Matt Scott (MHVLS) put on a great show, but it was veteran Mangawhai lifeguard and former winner Tai Flavell (MHVLS) who claimed final honours. A strong field of elder-statesman filled the Master Division, with the likes of Graham Darlow (MHVLS), Greg Gibb (MHVLS) and John Skirrow (Muriwai SLSC) enjoying the small waves. Eventual winner was NZ longboard icon Paul Browne (Orewa SLSC). Jess Costello (MHVLS) claimed another title in the Womens Division, gracing the fun contest conditions with her fluid style. In the Juniors, local grommets Bassie Waldron (MHVLS) and Nubby Critchfield (MHVLS) went head-to-head in the final, both showing some great skills on the nose. However, it was Waldron who took top honours with a maiden victory in the event. Former event organiser Marcus James reinstigated the Best and Fairest Club Award, awarded to Bethells Beach SLSC for their ongoing involvement and commitment to the event. Hira Edmonds recieved the award on behalf of the club. A massive thanks to businesses and individuals for their sponsorship and support. Winner of the Bammas Jive Creative Army longboard raffle was Aaron McConchie of Te Arai. Raffles raised over $1000 for the local club. FINAL: The Women’s Division line up, eventually won by local Jess Costello, second from left. |
