Mangawhai artists exhibit in November

During the summer, exhibitions at Mangawhai Artists Gallery will change every two weeks.

November features paintings by four Mangawhai artists where visitors will see a marvellous variety of work; bold, vibrant, subtle and moving. The themes include people and places.

Just concluded has been an exhibition in colour and texture by Pauline Gough and Bevan Lawrence.

Colour and textures describes Pauline’s love for impasto style – loose brushwork, deliberate texture and a spirited palette. All manner of subjects are rendered in a bold and lively approach. Pauline exhibits regularly on the Mangawhai Art Trail and has received a number of awards for her work.

Umbrellas are the feature of Bevan’s paintings. He is intrigued by their history. Umbrellas have been found as ancient artefacts of Egypt, Assyria, Greece. He loves painting them, they add colour to his artworks.

Bevan has always had a strong interest in art and, now retired in Mangawhai, has taken up oil painting full time.

Opening Thursday November 9 will be Clay Library – Our clay, Our composition, Ourselves by Rebecca Clist and Linda Hobbs.

Consider and enjoy the human form through the different approaches of Rebecca Clist and Linda Hobbs. Rebecca presents a figurative colour experience, while Linda uses portrait-based works. Both artists offer a fresh perspective on the human form for the viewer to enjoy.

Rebecca’s figures, male and female, are humanity stripped back, evoking Matisse and his celebration of life. Rebecca was awarded first place in the two dimensional category for her painting in the 2017 Kaipara Art Awards.

The faces of Maori are, for Linda, reflections of the people she has known. The Goldie-influenced representational style captures the timeless dignity of her subjects, and the painted narratives tell personal, engaging stories.

The Originals Art Group bring us Brush Strokes commencing Thursday November 23 until Wednesday December 6.This exhibition portrays an eclectic mix of oils, watercolours, acrylics, inks, pastels and crayons, all produced by local artists. Some works are made using successful and well-established methods while others may be somewhat experimental and a little quirky, interesting and entertaining.

Exhibitions are curated by the artists and work displayed belongs to the artists. Purchase is made directly with the artists and no commission is paid to Mangawhai Artists Inc.
