Colourful characters coming to townLife-size, colourful ‘guardians’ adopting everyday poses will be seen over the holiday period gracing the outer fringes of the museum surrounds. You’ll know them when you see them. You may even like to introduce yourself.
Sponsored by Creative Communities Kaipara and Placemakers, these colourfully painted, plywood cut-out characters are happy folk exuding the holiday spirit. The term ‘guardian’ is generally perceived as welcoming and protectors of the site. Similar figures are employed by many cultures (eg. totem poles) though in more recent times this concept has been used in a more contemporary fashion. The Mangawhai Art educational team of Brenda Adams, Elena Nikolaeva and Gayle Forster are entrusted with the project with each student taking a different and more personalised angle leading to brightly coloured interesting figures in a variety of poses which is the essence of our diverse community. The guardians are sure to create interest and discussion and are expected to be in-situ by mid-December. |
